riela Arabians, located at Moshav Bnei Zion in central Israel, is owned by Eitan and Ariela Wertheimer.  Among Arabian horse lovers the name Ariela conjours up visions of horses of exquisite type with expressive faces and excellent movement, and well it should as the farm’s breeding program focuses on breeding Arabians of classic desert type and outstanding beauty.  Most people do not realize it, but Ariela is actually quite a small farm with normally 20 - 25 horses in residence, including foals, and about eight foals born every year.

(Al Bilal x Dumka by Laheeb)
is the only Egyptian related horse at the farm

The farm’s cornerstone was the international sire Imperial Imdal (Ansata Imperial x Dalia) who stood at Ariela for three years.  The progeny he left behind is storybook stuff;  to name just a few, they include the 2004 World Champion Mare Loubna, the famous half-brothers Al Maraam and Laheeb, and the international multi-champion Mosalli.

The Vision HG
(Thee Desperado x Belle Staar by The Mintril),
the "Queen" of Ariela Arabians

Two extraordinary mares from America formed the foundation of the Ariela broodmare herd:  the 1977 grey AK Latifa (Ibn Moniet el Nefous x Siralima by Ansata Ibn Halima) bred by Bentwood Farms and imported in 1992, and the 1994 black The Vision HG (Thee Desperado x Belle Staar by The Minstil) bred by Marylinn Geurin, and imported in 1995.  Both mares proved themselves extraordinary producers and nicked exceptionally well with both Imdal and his sons.

Latifah AA
(Al Maraam x Imperial Kalatifa by Imperial Al Kamar),
Israeli National Champion Mare 2007

AK Latifa was a Dahman Shahwan in strain,  tracing in tail female to the foundation mare El Dahma through the prolific Babson foundation mare Bint Bint Sabah. Imported with her daughter Imperial Kalatifa (by Imperial Al Kamar) as an aged mare. Latifa produced a total of 4 foals for Ariela, each of them became Israeli National Champions.  Imperial Kalatifa  is dam of the full sisters Loubna and Luiba, both by Imperial Imdal, and the Al Maraam daughter Latifah AA, this year’s Israel National Champion Mare. Luiba and Latifah carry AK Latifa’s dam line forward within the Ariela herd.

AK Latifa’s main claim to fame is as the dam of Laheeb. Through this one son she created a worldwide legacy few mares will ever achieve as there is little doubt that Laheeb is Imperial Imdal’s most influential son worldwide.  He is also one of the leading representatives of the Saklawi I sire line of this generation, and like many straight Egyptians, carries the blood of the influential Nazeer sons Ansata Ibn Halima and Morafic through both sides of his pedigree.  Some say that Laheeb’s exceptional siring abilities come through his maternal grandsire, Ibn Moniet el Nefous (Morafic x Moniet El Nefous), a most influential and prolific broodmare sire for Bentwood; and, even further back, to the rare foundation stallion Sirecho (Nasr x Exochorda) [born 1939], a noted sire of exceptionally valuable breeding animals in America during the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Laheeb
(Imperial Imdal x AK Latifa)

Laheeb, three times National Champion of Israel, made history in the fall of 1998 when he was selected, as a two-year old and with no foals on the ground, to serve as chief sire at the two world famous National Studs of Poland,  Michalow & Janow Podlaski,  for the 1999-2000 breeding seasons. Among his best-known get are two World Champions: the Polish-bred mare Galilea, and the Israeli-born stallion Al Lahab, All-Nations Cup Champion Emira,  and the 2007 Polish National Champion Stallion Poganin.  Laheeb left a large number of excellent sons and daughters in Poland and is slated to return for the 2008 breeding season.

The Vison HG

The Vision HG is a double granddaughter of the extremely influential Egyptian stallion, The Minstril and a double great-granddaughter of the wonderful broodmare sire, The Egyptian Prince. Rare black in colour, with an extremely refined head and expressive eye, she is of the Saklawi Jedran strain and traces back to the foundation mare Radia [Ghadia] through the Blunt’s Ghazala.

Black as a raven: The Vison HG

An exceptional show mare herself, Vision has proven to be the dam of especially valuable sons, including the very popular and successful Al Maraam by Imperial Imdal, Al Lahab by Laheeb, and Al Hakim by Muhajjal.

Al Maraam
(Imperial Imdal x The Vision HG)
is currently standing in the USA

International Champion Al Maraam is currently the  leading sire of champions and show winners in Israel, including the 2007 Israeli National Champion Mare Latifah AA . He is the living proof of the exceptional results Ariela has obtained by crossing Imdal blood with progeny of Thee Desperado and The Minstril.  A beautifully marked brilliant bay in colour, Maraam quite resembles his beautiful dam. His extreme type, beautifully dished face, wonderful tail carriage, overall charisma and show presence are features he generously passes on to his get. A horse of exceptional character and gentle nature,  both Maraam and his sons are a pleasure to handle.
Al Maraam was on lease to the Michalow Stud for the 2006-2007 breeding seasons. A few months ago he left Poland for  California where he will stand at public stud at Furioso Farm until February 2010.

A second son of The Vision is the exotic Al Lahab, sired by Laheeb and owned by the Friedmann Family in Germany.  Al Lahab is one of the world's most highly decorated show horses and in 2006 alone he won the World Campion Stallion title in Paris, the All Nations Cup Senior Champion title and was Champion Stallion of the prestigious Dubai Gold Cup.  He is also a proven sire of champion get around the world.  The third son is the blue-black Al Hakim who stands at Black Smoke Farm in Germany.

In 2008 Al Hadiyah AA will be standing at "La Movida Arabians" in Austria
Click the image to see another picture of him!

On the basis of these sons The Vision is considered by many to be one of the most influential Arabian broodmare in the Middle East & Europe.  She has more recently produced two full brothers to Al Lahab; Al Hadiyah AA and Al Raheb AA. Both successful show champions with very bright futures ahead of them.  Al Hadiyah was shown in Israel four times and was champion all four times, and was the 2006 Israeli National Champion Colt.   This young stallion is  considered Laheeb’s heir apparent by many breeders, as he is his father’s  most look-alike son. He covered his first mares in 2007 and has been retained by the farm to be used as a future herd sire. He will spend the 2008 breeding season at La Movida Arabians in Austria.

Al Baraqai AA
(Baahir x The Vision HG)

The Vision is also the dam of three very classic daughters: Al Baraqai AA (x Baahir), Al Amal AA (x Halim Shah I) and Al Halah AA (x Laheeb). All have joined the broodmare herd to continue her dam line at Ariela and all have continued their dam’s success in the breeding barn. Al Baraqai’s first-born is the 2005 Israeli National Champion Filly Baraqaa AA by Laheeb.

Al Halah AA
(Laheeb x The Vision HG)

In the past few years, two exquisite fillies joined the herd; both purchased specifically to be bred to Laheeb and to bring additional bloodlines into the program. Both are successful show fillies and of similar quality and type to the famous Ariela mares.

Insha Sha Latifa
(Ansata Selman x Naffada)
was imported from Germany

The 2003 bay Insha Sha Latifa  (Ansata Selman x Naffada ex Imperial Imdal), was bred by InSha’Allah Arabians in Germany.  Her dam Naffada  was born at Ariela but sold while still a filly.  Insha is a pure-in-the-strain Dahman Shahwan, tracing tail female to the foundation mare El Dahma through the important mare Farida.  Her pedigree is studded with the names of  some of the most popular and successful horses of both the Ansata and Imperial programs. Through her dam line she traces to the very rare and valuable broodmare Deenaa, a boon to any breeding program focusing on extreme dryness and type.

Insha Sha Latifa

Nawal AA, her 2007 Al Maraam filly, was Insha’s first foal. Nawal placed third in the Filly Foal class at both at the Israel Event - Israel and at this year’s National Championships.  She and the colt Leran AA (Laheeb x Latifah AA), were recently sold to Lithuania to form the basis of a new straight Egyptian breeding program.

The farm's second import is the grey 2005 Ansata Sinan granddaughter Saniyyah RCA, sired by the German bred Mishaal HP and out of My Shooting Star ex Thee Desperado, bred by Rock Creek Arabians/USA. Like Insha Sha Latifa, she is Dahman Shahwan in strain, tracing tail female to El Dahma through Bint Bint Sabbah, the matriarch of another branch of this prolific family.  A close look at Saniyyah’s pedigree reveals that she not only shares a dam line with AK Latifa and her progeny, but like them, carries the blood of the extremely important broodmare sires Ibn Moniet el Nefous and Sirecho on the dam side of her pedigree. Already well-loved as an extremely beautiful and charismatic show filly,  Sanniyah’s genotype brings with it all the elements she needs to become a true foundation broodmare.

(Maishaal HP x My Shooting Star)

Ariela is a great believer in sharing their home-bred stallions with the world and has made it a policy to lease out some of their best. The farm’s very special relationship with the two state studs of Poland and the wonderful opportunities that have resulted are something in which they take great pride.  Conversely, they are always looking for outside stallions that can enhance the herd’s strong genetic foundation and keep it moving forward.  Over the years various famous and some not-so-famous stallions have been leased by Ariela for this purpose.  All have come from Europe or America because political realities have kept Israel relatively isolated within our region.

In September 2005, after a long search for a proper herd sire,  Ariela leased the stallion Al Ayad (Moheeb x Al Mamunah ex Maysoun) from Monica Wenzel in Germany.  Ayad’s classic old type and rare bloodlines greatly appealed, as did the fact that he traces to the great mare Moheba II [Ghazal x Malacha].  His maternal grandsire Maysoun is one of the most successful Ansata Halim Shah son’s in Germany.  And finally Ayad’s strain is Hadban Enzahi, the same strain from which emerged the great breeding stallions Nazeer and Aswan.

Al Ayad arrived in Israel before he had sired his first foal. The decision to lease him was based purely on long professional experience, a strong belief in the stallion’s genetic potential, and the courage to trust one’s own instincts.

With the exception of Al Ayad, all of the 2007 Ariela foals were sired by proven stallions,  which included  Ansata Selman, Al Maraam, Al Bilal, and True Colours.  And as is true every year, the birth of each and every foal was celebrated and greeted with joy. But there was an added sense of elation and satisfaction when Al Ayad’s firstborn was foaled and then the second and the third. His foals were stamped with their sire’s broad forehead, big eyes, small chiseled ears, correct conformation, and tremendous movement and tail carriage. All grey with good pigmentation.

Al Amal AA
(Halim Shah I x The Vision HG) is the dam of...

A typical Ayad filly  is the exquisite Ayat AA, out of Vision’s daughter Al Amal, sired by Hungary’s chief sire Halim Shah I (Ansata Halim Shah x 214 Ibn Galal I by Ibn Galal I), a proven broodmare sire tracing tail-female to Tuhotmos’ important daughter Tamria.   Ayat has an extremely refined face with large expressive eyes, a beautifully laid-back shoulder, wonderful topline and the tremendous movement and gay tail carriage of her sire. She won the title of Reserve Champion Filly Foal at this year’s Egyptian Event - Israel.

A second Ayad filly of similar quality and type is Haniyah AA, the firstborn of  Al Hala AA [Laheeb x The Vision HG], full sister to both Al Lahab and Al Hadiyah.  She and Ayat, her three-quarter sister in blood, share an outstanding feature much sought after by Ariela - both have exquisitely shaped dark eyes of great expression that are perfectly set into the skull within prominent sockets - exactly the type of eye that brings a sense of perfection to an already classic Arabian head.

As a group Ayad’s foals more than surpassed expectations and most of Ariela’s broodmares were bred to him before his return to Germany in late August.  Of particular mention is Maar Bilahh (El Halimaar x Bint Nabilahh), a rare 23-year old granddaughter of both Ansata Ibn Halima and Morafic. Maar Bilahh is a multi-champion herself and dam of, among others, the very successful stallion Imperial Mahzeer in Qatar.

The newest member of the Ariela stallion battery comes not from Europe but America and will stand in Israel through 2008.  He is the very exotic and exciting three year old Nader Al Jamal, bred by Gail Mailloux and now owned by Capstone Arabians & Tourbillon Farms/USA.

Nader Al Jamal
(Ansata Sinan x Savannah CC)
is the latest import from the United States

Nader has an extremely rare and potent pedigree - his sire is the very classic multi-champion Ansata Sinan and his dam the Thee Desperado daughter Savannah CC, herself a multi-champion, and out of Bint Magidaa’s famous Minstril daughter Miss Maggie Mae.  Industry experts agree that Nader is one of the most look-alike sons of Ansata Sinan.

Ariela has been closely following the Ansata breeding program for over two decades and has long considered Sinan to be one of Ansata’s best stallions.  The farm has quietly been looking for just the right Sinan son for several years; one with both the phenotype and genotype to fit with the Ariela mares, and has finally found him.

Nader Al Jamal knows how to trot!

Nader has followed family tradition and already established himself as a serious contender in two deep classes of international competition: he was Reserve Champion Futurity Colt at the Egyptian Event USA both in 2005 and 2006. This year his full younger brother took home the Futurity Championship title at the Egyptian Event in Kentucky.

In his Israeli showring debut last September Nader won the Junior Champion Colt title at the Israeli Egyptian Event. Manfred Neubacher, one of three judges there commented, "My favorite, and for me the best horse in the show, was Nader Al Jamal, a wonderful young stallion, who even as a three-year old horse is nearly perfect and makes a great impression with his harmony."  Nader’s  second show was the 2007 Israeli National Championships where he took home the title of National Champion Colt.  At both shows he was the judges’ unanimous choice.

Breeder Gail Mailloux recalls, “My first view of Nader was moments after his birth.  His mother was standing guard over him, both of them steaming in the early morning sun from the struggle of delivery.  Without entering the stall I knew what we had. The head was extreme, the legs were long, and he looked like nothing I had ever seen before.  Nader had an unusual presence about him, and from that first moment I knew he belonged to the world.”

At just a few days old, Nader was captured by world reknown photographer Jerry Sparagowski in a stunning photo now known as "The Calling Shot".  This photo was Nader's introduction to Arabian breeders throughout the world, as it was published at the "Arabian Horse World" magazine.

(Thee Desperado x Miss Maggie Mae)

Joe Polo, who negotiated the breeding of some of the industry’s top mares to Ansata Sinan said this about the match between Savannah CC and Sinan:  “Nader Al Jamal could arguably be one of Ansata Sinan’s best straight Egyptian sons.  Nader is bred to breed pretty, and both his sire and dam are extreme in type.  Also Nader’s tail female has notably produced some of the breed’s most influential sires.”

Nader’s great granddam, is one of the breed’s most famous broodmares - Bint Magidaa (Khofo x Magidaa), dam of the outstanding brothers Ruminaja Ali, Ruminaja Bahjat, and Alidaar [all by Shaikh al Badi], each of which has left his mark as a sire around the world.  Her dam is the legendary Magidaa of the very rare Abbayan Om Jurrays strain, and regarded as broodmare sire Alaa el Din’s most important daughter.  Magidaa left influential progeny in leading breeding programs on every continent.  In Europe the very significant sires Salaa el Dine and Jamil emerged from this same strain through their famous dam Hanan.

Nader Al Jamal has a bright future ahead of him

Nader arrived in Israel in time for the 2007 breeding season and his extreme type,  smooth topline, and clean-cut and perfectly set-on neck made him a very popular breeding choice.  His book was closed after covering 35 mares and many latecomers were left disappointed and have already booked for next season. And of course, the majority of the Ariela mares are slated to be bred to Nader in 2008.

Nader’s very first foal was born on the last day of October in northern Israel.  She is a beautiful grey filly with her sire’s beautiful, dished head, tiny ears, and extremely big black eyes.  Her dam is the chestnut Imperial Imdal daughter Kamilla (x Imperial Kittana).

Nader Al Jamal enjoys his life in Israel

Now with summer over and winter approaching, everyone at Ariela is counting the days until foaling season arrives again - this time for Nader’s foals. It’s a sure thing that this magnificently-bred young stallion will make a significant contribution to the program, and that the best is yet to come!
